Introducing the OnePlus Phone Piano

OnePlus, the leading smartphone manufacturer, today unveils its latest invention, the Phone Piano.

The lifesize, real-time piano is part of OnePlus’ on-going mission to help people connect with what really matters – each other – through the medium of music.

The Phone Piano has traditional keys replaced with 17 individual OnePlus 7T Pro handsets arranged in a line, creating a seamless and smooth keyboard that takes full advantage of the class-leading 90 Hz Fluid Display, as well as showcasing the flagship’s powerful performance.

So smooth and responsive is the 90 Hz screen technology that even a glissando – a fast slide across keys – can be made just like a conventional piano.

The handsets are housed in a custom-built and routed piano, which has been handcrafted in London from a lightweight whitewood, with the design finalised in 3D modelling application Cinema 4D. Each handset sits in a custom routed tray cut from a solid block of fibre board using computer-controlled tools, resulting in perfectly aligned handsets.

Sound amplification comes courtesy of two computers housed within the Phone Piano. A server receives signals and a synthesiser produces accurate notes alongside a series of speakers and subwoofer. The bottom of the piano has specifically created acoustic ports to allow soundwaves to flow correctly.

Each keystroke sends a signal to the server, which in turn sends a signal to the synthesiser playing the corresponding note. In order for the pianist to see which keys are being pressed, a special graphical user interface displays a smooth visual representation of the key being held.
